Mandatory Sim Upgrade

Hi.  On Wednesday, January 5, beginning at:

3pm US/Eastern

Noon US/Pacific

20:00 UTC

we will be upgrading the OSGrid backend services to a newer version of OpenSim.  With this upgrade, Hypergrid connections to and from OSGrid will again be working.  If you operate your own grid you can feel free to test HG connections to OSGrid’s test grid [ hg.danger.osgrid.org:80:Westshore ] which is running with the same software and configuration as we’ll have after January 5.

This will require sim operators to be running one of the two most recent OSGrid releases [ osgrid.opensim-12222010.v0.7.1.25ecd62.zip or osgrid.opensim-12142010.v0.7.1.ed26376.zip ].  If you compile OpenSim yourself from source, any rev after and including ed26376 from the master branch should be fine.  If you’re a sim operator and you’re already running one of these versions, you don’t have to do anything.  If you’re a sim operator and you’re running older versions of OpenSim, you’ll need to upgrade any time between now and January 5 to one of these supported versions.  We’re doing the upgrade in January because wanted to make sure people had enough time to upgrade with upcoming holidays for many.

If you upgrade now, your sim will still be reachable prior to the grid service upgrade.  E.g. Lbsa Plaza is currently running osgrid.opensim-12142010.v0.7.1.ed26376.zip and is reachable.

Thanks for your assistance.

Hypergrid Update

Hello Metaverse peoples.  Just a quick note that, yes, we’re aware that Hypergrid connections with OSGrid aren’t currently functional.  Our grid service setup is a bit… complicated.  Currently we run 6 separate Robust instances using 4 different configs behind a reverse proxy.  Add to that a number of recent config changes in OpenSim, and we end up with a number of different things to test.  But we have a replica of OSGrid running and are testing some config changes to try to get HG working again.

Empty Your Trash

Hi.  A while back we disabled the ability to empty your Trash folder from in-world.  Because of OSGrid’s openness, allowing anyone who wants to connect a sim to the grid, we face a different set of security considerations than entirely closed grids.  To help keep your stuff safe, we’ve limited the ability to empty your av’s Trash folder to the website.

If you log into http://osgrid.org using your av’s name and password, you’ll now see an “Empty Trash” option in the “Grid” section of the menu.  Click that link, then follow the instructions to have your Trash folder cleared out.  It’s easy.

Thanks for your patience, and thanks for using OSGrid.

Grid Back Online

Hi everyone.  OSGrid is back online.  We took advantage of the downtime today to do some grid maintenance we were originally going to schedule for a few weeks from now.  We moved the database backend for the central grid services (except assets) to a new pair of db servers.  Our backend dbs had grown so large, and the disks on the machine serving them were sufficiently slow, that running the backups would effectively take down the inventory server for up to an hour.  So we had disabled the automatic, nightly db backups because they were causing inventory problems for users.  But that meant we didn’t have automatic, nightly db backups anymore.  We had to backup the dbs by hand when an admin was available to babysit the grid servers while it ran and kill the backup if they started causing problems.

The fallout from that is that the most recent inventory backup we have is from June 11.  While it appears most users were unaffected by the inventory problems yesterday, some were.  If your inventory is missing and you have an Inventory ARchive (IAR) you can just load it up in a region you’re in and your inventory will be restored.  If you don’t have an IAR to restore from, we can restore your inventory to as it was the date of the most recent backup, June 11.  We apologize for the inconvenience we know this will cause.  To have your inventory restored from June 11, please send your full avatar name via email to info@osgrid.org.  Depending on the number of people affected this may take us a day or two to complete the restoration for them.

The good news is now that we’ve migrated our db services to a new pair of hosts, we’re able, and have already started, making multiple db backups per day.  This will allow us to minimize impact from any sort of catastrophic failure in the future, and help us to recover more quickly.

It’s not clear at this point what caused the inventory erasure for some users, but we may never really know the answer.  OpenSim is still alpha quality software, and unexpected things can and will happen.  That’s not to say we couldn’t have done a better job with backups; because OSGrid is 100% donation driving we try to be as thrifty as possible, but in this case we should’ve spent the money earlier when we disabled automatic backups to quickly get us to a place where we could turn them back on.  But today we have the benefit of hindsight.

We apologize for the downtime and for the inventory troubles for those affected, thank you for your patience, and thank you for using OSGrid.

Enabling Group IM

Hi.  You may have noticed that group IM for some in-world groups doesn’t work.  Group owners who wish to enable group IM can do so by following the below instructions, but presently this means making the group member list visible to all users.  We didn’t want to force this change on people who didn’t want it, so we’re leaving it up to group owners to make this change.  We’re looking into the feasibility of enabling group IM without making group membership visible to non-members, but for now group owners can enable group IM by:

  • Selecting the group from the in-world group menu
  • Click “Info”
  • Click the “Members & Roles” tab
  • Click the “Roles” tab
  • Select “Everyone”
  • check the box next to “Members are visible”
  • click “OK”

Group IM should then work.  If you’re still having issues, or have other comments, feel free to post to the comment thread.

Dead Region Cleanup

[ The below article is an updated version of one I wrote for the most recent issue of the in-world newspaper, the OSGrid Gazet. ]

In your travels around the grid you have likely encountered a region which was in the grid map but not actually accessible.  Sometimes this unavailability is normal, such as when a sim crashes.  But these days the map contains many regions which no longer exist.  Until several months ago regions which were down for 24 hours were purged from the grid database, and therefore the map, but that mechanism broke when OpenSim changed and began storing coordinates in the grid database in meters and, well, we never got around to fixing it.  But we’re fixing it.  We have already begun regular region checks, and will begin purging regions which remain inaccessible.  We’ll start by purging regions which remain down for one week, though we may shorten that time period down the road.

So what does “purge regions” mean?  It simply means removing an inaccessible region from the grid.  What it does *not* mean is removing data from any regions.  If, for example, you are a region operator, your sim crashes and is inaccessible, and you go on vacation for two weeks your region would be purged from the grid region list.  The data on your region would remain untouched.  To return a purged region to the grid, just restart it.  You may or may not have to change your region’s coordinates, as we currently have no way for a down region to reserve spaces in the grid, but otherwise you can bring your region back up exactly as it was before.

Why are we doing this?  Teleporting to a region only to find it no longer exists isn’t fun.  And because of the way OpenSim region-to-region communication works, it wastes resources trying to communicate with neighbors which no longer exist.  Purging these dead regions will lead to a better experience for grid users and region operators.

We’ll begin purging dead regions on or after 00:01 UTC on Friday, June 25 (that’s Thursday 5pm US/Pacific). A number of people have posted instructions in http://osgrid.org/forums on how to automatically restart sims when they crash, if that’s of interest to any region operators.

We’re expecting approximately 4,000 of the currently registered regions to no longer be in operation and disappear from the map when the purging resumes.  This isn’t a bad thing; many of these dead regions were simply test regions or remnants of first-time region operators learning about OpenSim.  In fact, we know 500 of these dead regions were from one test by one person.  But the grid is still healthy and growing.

So when the region count on the osgrid.org home page drops, don’t be alarmed.  We’re just doing a little spring cleaning.

Upcoming asset service db maintenance

Update: This work has been completed.

~~~
Hello.  This Sunday beginning at 11pm US/Eastern (that’s UTC-4) the OSGrid asset service will be taken offline for database maintenance.  The downtime is expected to be no more than 30 minutes.  The grid will remain up during this time, but item uploads will fail.  No changes will be required by region operators or users.
When the work has been completed I’ll update this post.  I’ll also post to Twitter and in the #osgrid IRC channel on freenode.
Apologies for the inconvenience, and thanks for using OSGrid.
