Grid wide “places” search reactivated.

Hello Everyone,

I am happy to announce that we have revived the places search this week, I would like to thank Andrew Hellershanks and Melanie Milland for helping us work out some last minute bugs to get things working smoothly with search.  If you want to get your Region’s/Parcels listed in the places search you must download the latest OSgrid release (OSgrid OpenSimulator 0.6.9.post-fixes.116bcb2 – [zip] [22.4mb] 08-21-2010).  Once you have updated your simulator software you will need to ensure that you have “Show Places in Search” box checked in the “About Land” panel on the Options tab.  It might take a few hours for your regions to be indexed and for any changes you make to your parcel description after the initial indexing.  Be sure to use key words that relate to what your region/parcel is offering, IE: if you offer freebies be sure to mention that in the parcel description on the About Land > General tab for each parcel you want listed. If you have any questions about getting your regions into the search index please join us on the Web Chat / IRC @ irc.freenode.net #osgrid and ask for some help.

Grid Back Online

Hi everyone.  OSGrid is back online.  We took advantage of the downtime today to do some grid maintenance we were originally going to schedule for a few weeks from now.  We moved the database backend for the central grid services (except assets) to a new pair of db servers.  Our backend dbs had grown so large, and the disks on the machine serving them were sufficiently slow, that running the backups would effectively take down the inventory server for up to an hour.  So we had disabled the automatic, nightly db backups because they were causing inventory problems for users.  But that meant we didn’t have automatic, nightly db backups anymore.  We had to backup the dbs by hand when an admin was available to babysit the grid servers while it ran and kill the backup if they started causing problems.

The fallout from that is that the most recent inventory backup we have is from June 11.  While it appears most users were unaffected by the inventory problems yesterday, some were.  If your inventory is missing and you have an Inventory ARchive (IAR) you can just load it up in a region you’re in and your inventory will be restored.  If you don’t have an IAR to restore from, we can restore your inventory to as it was the date of the most recent backup, June 11.  We apologize for the inconvenience we know this will cause.  To have your inventory restored from June 11, please send your full avatar name via email to info@osgrid.org.  Depending on the number of people affected this may take us a day or two to complete the restoration for them.

The good news is now that we’ve migrated our db services to a new pair of hosts, we’re able, and have already started, making multiple db backups per day.  This will allow us to minimize impact from any sort of catastrophic failure in the future, and help us to recover more quickly.

It’s not clear at this point what caused the inventory erasure for some users, but we may never really know the answer.  OpenSim is still alpha quality software, and unexpected things can and will happen.  That’s not to say we couldn’t have done a better job with backups; because OSGrid is 100% donation driving we try to be as thrifty as possible, but in this case we should’ve spent the money earlier when we disabled automatic backups to quickly get us to a place where we could turn them back on.  But today we have the benefit of hindsight.

We apologize for the downtime and for the inventory troubles for those affected, thank you for your patience, and thank you for using OSGrid.

**GRID OFFLINE – UPDATES!

Hello everyone,

First, let me apologize for the grid downtime, for those who are not aware of whats happening, late on Sunday evening it came to our attention that a handful of peoples inventories were reset.   Since we were not sure what was happening we immediately downed the grid in case bad things were still occurring.  We began a database restore for comparison, but because of our current backup server configurations, ie. Software Raid, this machines ability to restore the database is amazingly slow.  On another note some good news, this hardware is scheduled for this week to begin phase 1 of the hardware upgrade to fancy new high-power Hardware raid adapters, sadly this would have already been done a few weeks ago, but unfortunately we ordered the wrong 1u riser boards for our servers and the upgrade had to be rescheduled until we found the proper parts, not so easy!! anyway back to the real issue, because we found out so late about the issue on Sunday night, our volunteer staff tried to stay as long as we possibly could without being so tired that we would likely do more harm than good to the databases.  So I again want to apologize to everyone that we could not stay up all night and fix the servers as quickly as we would like, but you can rest assured that we will be back early in the A.M. on Monday morning trying to make things as right as we can for everyone who is having issues.  Until the database restore is complete we will not have any good explanation as to what really happened, but as soon as we do know i promise you all will know as well, Thank you for your understanding, it is a great pleasure to work with the great citizens of this grid, if you have any questions or would like to report you had inventory issues before the grid went down, please post on the following forum thread : [Grid Downtime Discussion]

OSG3B Load Test (Friday July 16 5pm PST)

Hello Again Everyone,

As you all know OSgrids 3rd Birthday is coming up July 22-26 and we would like to perform some load tests on the Celebration region this weekend,  The 1st test will be 5pm PST this Friday (July 16).  I would like to get around 50 people on “OSG3B Celebration” So if you have some time on Friday night lets everyone gather up some friends and meet at this region to see how things hold up.  We will probably do some more load tests over the weekend depending on how this 1st round goes, I will update with times as we figure things out.   Also just a reminder we do have some open spaces left, so if you are interested in putting up a parcel display or even just some smaller displays around the sim please contact me on the forums or in world and let me know what you want to do.  Also, if you are a DJ or Musical performer, or even know friends who are and would like to perform at OSG3B we would love to have you, again just contact me on the forums on in world and we can work out times and locations.  Also Eryn Galen is making a OSGazet Special Edition OSG3B, and if you would like to advertise anything or contribute articles about OSgrid or OSG3B please contact her on the forums or in world.   That is really all i have for now, but keep checking back and check out the forums for times events and things to come.   Thanks to everyone who already has contributed, lets make OSG3B the best OSgrid Birthday yet!!

Thanks Everyone

Enabling Group IM

Hi.  You may have noticed that group IM for some in-world groups doesn’t work.  Group owners who wish to enable group IM can do so by following the below instructions, but presently this means making the group member list visible to all users.  We didn’t want to force this change on people who didn’t want it, so we’re leaving it up to group owners to make this change.  We’re looking into the feasibility of enabling group IM without making group membership visible to non-members, but for now group owners can enable group IM by:

  • Selecting the group from the in-world group menu
  • Click “Info”
  • Click the “Members & Roles” tab
  • Click the “Roles” tab
  • Select “Everyone”
  • check the box next to “Members are visible”
  • click “OK”

Group IM should then work.  If you’re still having issues, or have other comments, feel free to post to the comment thread.

Dead Region Cleanup

[ The below article is an updated version of one I wrote for the most recent issue of the in-world newspaper, the OSGrid Gazet. ]

In your travels around the grid you have likely encountered a region which was in the grid map but not actually accessible.  Sometimes this unavailability is normal, such as when a sim crashes.  But these days the map contains many regions which no longer exist.  Until several months ago regions which were down for 24 hours were purged from the grid database, and therefore the map, but that mechanism broke when OpenSim changed and began storing coordinates in the grid database in meters and, well, we never got around to fixing it.  But we’re fixing it.  We have already begun regular region checks, and will begin purging regions which remain inaccessible.  We’ll start by purging regions which remain down for one week, though we may shorten that time period down the road.

So what does “purge regions” mean?  It simply means removing an inaccessible region from the grid.  What it does *not* mean is removing data from any regions.  If, for example, you are a region operator, your sim crashes and is inaccessible, and you go on vacation for two weeks your region would be purged from the grid region list.  The data on your region would remain untouched.  To return a purged region to the grid, just restart it.  You may or may not have to change your region’s coordinates, as we currently have no way for a down region to reserve spaces in the grid, but otherwise you can bring your region back up exactly as it was before.

Why are we doing this?  Teleporting to a region only to find it no longer exists isn’t fun.  And because of the way OpenSim region-to-region communication works, it wastes resources trying to communicate with neighbors which no longer exist.  Purging these dead regions will lead to a better experience for grid users and region operators.

We’ll begin purging dead regions on or after 00:01 UTC on Friday, June 25 (that’s Thursday 5pm US/Pacific). A number of people have posted instructions in http://osgrid.org/forums on how to automatically restart sims when they crash, if that’s of interest to any region operators.

We’re expecting approximately 4,000 of the currently registered regions to no longer be in operation and disappear from the map when the purging resumes.  This isn’t a bad thing; many of these dead regions were simply test regions or remnants of first-time region operators learning about OpenSim.  In fact, we know 500 of these dead regions were from one test by one person.  But the grid is still healthy and growing.

So when the region count on the osgrid.org home page drops, don’t be alarmed.  We’re just doing a little spring cleaning.

Upcoming asset service db maintenance

Update: This work has been completed.

~~~
Hello.  This Sunday beginning at 11pm US/Eastern (that’s UTC-4) the OSGrid asset service will be taken offline for database maintenance.  The downtime is expected to be no more than 30 minutes.  The grid will remain up during this time, but item uploads will fail.  No changes will be required by region operators or users.
When the work has been completed I’ll update this post.  I’ll also post to Twitter and in the #osgrid IRC channel on freenode.
Apologies for the inconvenience, and thanks for using OSGrid.
*UPGRADE WARNING: Please read this!
Hello again everyone, I bring more news about the refactoring process. First let me start by stressing how important it is you do not update your regions past todays new release posted on OSgrid.org website. This is the last working version prior to the Refactoring, of which no one should attempt to go beyond at this point. Be aware that if you upgrade, there is no easy downgrading and you will find yourself rebuilding your sims from backups, or if your were not wise enough to do backups, starting over from scratch to get it back on OSgrid. So please, PLEASE! always do backups before upgrading, but in this case do not go past the revision posted on the website until we announce it is safe to do so.
In terms of the refactoring process, we have begun testing on a small test grid that is not currently accessible to the public, but the Administrators are doing their best to iron out the many kinks that have come from such drastic changes to the core software code. We ask everyone please be patient, and if you have the time help the developers to debug issues with the new grid software. If you are able we need people to setup their own mini test grids locally and see what kind of bugs you can shake loose. We have a long road ahead until we can actually pull the trigger for OSgrid and move on, but until then please be patient and if you have any questions or would like to become more involved, just visit our IRC chat rooms or the web chat on the main website (irc.freenode.net – #osgrid – #opensim – #opensim-dev). Thanks everyone and keep checking back for more details soon.
